I Got Paid to Look at Porn Today

Sometimes the duties required of a librarian absolutely astound me.

Over the years I’ve been a plumber, a furniture mover, and an all-around problem solver. Today however, was a new one even for me…

Allow me to back up a bit here. This situation began about a week ago when our Childrens’ Internet computers lost their Internet connectivity. I quickly diagnosed the problem and fixed it, however my solution apparently circumvented the filtering that we use only in the Childrens’ Department.

[aside] I’m not a fan of Internet filtering. It gets in the way of serious research and it’s against professional ideals. That said, I have absolutely no problem with filtering only the Children’s computers. I have no problem with this because as long as a child has permission from a guardian that child can use the PCs anywhere in the building… And all other computers are wide-open allowing unfettered intellectual access to information.

Anyway, the specifics of what ensued I cannot reveal as they would most certainly out my true identity. What I can write, however, is that after a full day of attempted fixes on my part, which consisted of altering various network settings time and again, and then checking to see if these changes actually worked, I got to see quite a bit of porn as there is no other way to test a porn filter than to visit porn sites to see if they are blocked.

… My job is very strange, even when I’m all by my lonesome.

  1. I do the same thing, but not networkwise. If I get a report that the filter is NOT blocking something, I need to check why not. So someone will tell me, “that guy is looking at something that says, giant asses something,'” and so I need to google every site with giant asses to find the ones we aren’t blocking. giant asses or crooked dicks or furry muffs: it’s not pretty, but it’s what I went to library school for…

  2. Sounds bad. We have some sort of filtering but i don’t think it works well.

I used to have the wonderful job of getting rid of desktop wallpaper some patrons would lovingly save on the library pcs. They ran the gamut from hardcore porn or cum shots to a blowup of a huge middle finger…

  3. Exactly, and it wasn’t even good porn. A while back I blogged about how Porn Man used to load porn onto our PACs, those are the catalog computers for those who aren’t hip to all the librarian lingo… Anyway, Porn Man doesn’t need the Internet as he has an enormous backpack filled with porn in every format imaginable.

I think he might even have an 8-Track in there. So, when he was done on the Internet, or when he was waiting for an Internet PC to open up he would wander around until he saw an open PAC, and then he would stick his stick or floppy into one of the ports and copy his porn to view from there. For a while I was finding porn everywhere! I have subsequently fixed that security hole. And again it was lousy porn… Like the difference between a typical street walking hooker, and a upscale call girl if you get my drift?

Incidentally, while doing serious research about social networking sites I do believe that I discovered the best way to view Internet porn; Tumblr. This is because Tumblr strips the content from the source. As a viewer you don’t have to worry about spyware or viruses infecting your computer. Whoever posted the image took that hit for you (thanks). And the best part is that you can subscribe to anyone’s updates so once you find whatever it is that you’re into you get a steady stream of “clean” porn delivered to you, more or less, in real time. Incidentally, since Tumblr works this way I don’t even think that any filtering is savvy enough to catch it… ? LOL! This might take some more looking into, I’ll keep you all abreast of the situation. At any rate Tumblr is an excellent resource (and I don’t mean just for porn). It allows users to make what is essentially a digital scrapbook, very cool!

  4. Hi Angsty! How’s this?

This was hacked by three adolescent boys… I knew that they were up to something mischievous so I immediately checked the PC after thy left. I have to admit that seeing this made me a whole lot less Woeful and actually brought a smile to my face. It isn’t porn, and it wasn’t anything permanent. It was a great adolescent prank!

    😀

  5. Geez, it’s always adolescent boys who go look at stuff and leave it on the library’s public pcs, makes me glad i no longer have to be a librarian who has to monitor them.

    She looks rather healthy! lol
