  1. be afraid. be very afraid

  2. I am.

  3. What’s a gulag? (yes, too lazy to look it up!)

Something you might find interesting, in a disturbing way, about a specific subset of people (animal rights and environmental rights activists), but which could easily be applied to everyone eventually:

It is a reporter who has followed “the green scare” for a few years, and it is so scary to see it all sort of collected there. Hard to deny the trend that has been happening.

  4. “Gulag” is derived from the old Soviet penal system representing exceptionally harsh prison camps. Often times, serious human rights violations occur in these types of institutions… Guantanamo Bay is our gulag. As an aside, our “thug caste” is represented by corporate mercenary armies such as Blackwater, and Halliburton.

  5. A gulag is a prisoner of war jail/prison. Think Hogan’s Heroes. As for the list of 10 noted above, remember the Y2K scare? It’s all what we choose to believe.

  6. […] to Fascism as Outlined in a New Best Selling Book by Naomi […]

  7. Wolf has still got it going on. So when do we do something? When we are so uncomfortable and oppressed that we have the courage to put our lives on the line? Right now we are too busy watching TV.

  8. No better time than now to contact your Representatives… Joining couldn’t hurt either, I did after they condemned Congress for condemning them, and ignoring what they were elected to do (defend the Constitution)… What a bunch of dumbasses.

  9. People keep saying we are on the road to or “becoming” a fascist police state. This is not accurate. We are not on the road to or “becoming” a fascist police state. The U.S. is a fascist police state and has been for some time. The rule of law has been suspended. The Constitution, initially intended to protect citizens from an overzealous government authority, is now being used to impose sanctions against the citizenry — when it is used at all. Military and police groups arbitrarily detain and incarcerate persons regularly with no regard to international or internal law. Internal surveillance systems are in full play. People are stopped and asked for their papers on the street in this country. This country. And deported or incarcerated if they are not carrying papers or those papers are deemed unacceptable. Citizen groups as well as individual citizens are harassed and targeted. The press is a propoganda machine. Questioning authority is labeled treason and garners attack. What exactly is left that suggests we are not a fascist police state?

  10. We’re only as free as our ever tightening leash allows. The irony of it all, is that the politicians who’ve eroded our freedoms have also eroded their very own liberty in the process, yet they don’t seem to comprehend the damage they’re doing to themselves, and to the Constitution they’ve sworn to defend. What we now need to prevent, is the evolution of this protofascism we’ve fostered, into full-scale martial law.

  11. Of course they comprehend it, Woe. They just do not care.

  12. I’m not so sure. I think they’re thinking that the situation can be controlled… But the genie’s out of the bottle, and these things tend to go from bad to worse. So far, little has changed in the daily lives of most Americans, but there really isn’t anything preventing citizens from being locked up for anything/nothing now that surveillance is ubiquitous, and habeas corpus is gone. People can be made to vanish (including politicians), and there is no accountability anymore… Power corrupts.

  13. I think they figure as long as they tow the line [which they are doing quite well] they remain safe.

  14. … I’m sure that many Communist, and Fascist leaders thought the same thing right up until the end. This is what I meant when I wrote that they “don’t seem to comprehend” the severity of their actions.

  15. shit I got to buy the book cause the lady who wrote just might be my fucking soul mate!

  16. Haha…Daaaaaaave!

  17. It may be even worse when you do not have all those blatantly awful display of social jailing and you do feel like you are “free”, when you are not.. However, not being American, I cannot dare criticise a system, whilst I found very interesting the motivation Rifkin adds to the current American paranoia (and related fascist approach to the State) in his “The European Dream: How Europe’s Vision of the Future Is Quietly Eclipsing the American Dream”…

  18. We have had blatant public jailing and we have watched a major city’s residents drown starve and die while being shot down in the streets for foraging for food because, when Katrina hit, the White House did not send aid it sent troops.

This is not hypothetical. This is reality. People pretend it is not. Like some vast national blindfold has descended on the citizenry that just makes it imperitive to pretend we are America, we are the brave, we are the free, we are the good guys. Or gag — people talking get tasered. While we enforce democracy with military might overseas.

When did “democracy” become a matter of force, not choice? When did democracy become something to be imposed upon a people who do not seek or want it? Is anybody home? Are the lights on?

And all of this while we as a country are sanctioning torture and internment in what are essentially concentration camps.

Good guys do not put people in concentration camps. The brave and the free do not shoot people for seeking food. And people who respect democracy do not demand it at gun point.

  19. Welcome 88days! That’s just what I was thinking… The ultimate con would be to convince the people that they are “free,” when in fact, they are far from it. Europe is indeed doing some great progressive political, financial, and social work right now. It’s going to be interesting to watch the evolution of this over the next 10 years.

  20. … And Blackwater just got a $92 million contract from Uncle Sam. Is this Democracy in action? I think not, but it certainly is capitalism in action. It’s too bad we don’t do Democracy as well as we do the materialistic stuff.

  21. Honestly, there are part of EU (unfortunately, I guess, we are still not ONE country, but a mashup of good intentions and high expectations) that have got a forward looking attitude and a real political and democratic standing.. or at least it is the best you can do given the raw material available (men are not exactly kind to their siblings..).. I live in the other side of EU, the one that is mastering the con!!! Clearly, nobody shoot at us (almost, to be fair, almost..) and we are not trying to enforce anything abroad, not that we would be able to.. still, I do agree with max, there is no point in disturbing social philosophy and having mouthful of nice words when you “impose”. Still, there are cultural divides within countries that allow politicians and so-called leaders to act the opposite of their smooth talking, and sometimes people do not want to face the truth simply because that would imply to re-evaluate an entire system of conducting one’s life. Most people would love not to be able to think, as that would allow them to leave effortlessly …
Then, the political class is generally an extension of the country as it is in a given historical time.. and this would lead to a stack of consideration about US, Italy, France, Spain and, and, and, and, and….
    tks for having me here!

  22. No problem 88days… Thanks for visiting!

  23. V – for Vendetta!

  24. 1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy
    2. Create a gulag
    Where is it?
    3. Develop a thug caste
    Janet Reno’s ATF?
    4. Set up an internal surveillance system
    Every state has one.
    5. Harass citizens’ groups
    Like Code Pink does?
    6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release
    Like FDR?
    7. Target key individuals
Why is Noam Chomsky still alive?
    8. Control the press
The DNC controls 90 percent of the media.
    9. Dissent equals treason
It’s funny that full-on traitors think that treason simply equals dissent.
    10. Suspend the rule of law
    When’s this going to happen?

  25. LOL… Weak. If you actually believe your own bullshit, Zyprexa might be the answer.

  26. Hello Librarianwoes! I like your site! I’ve signed with wordpress recently, and it’s good know that I’m sharing this community with like-minded people. We have so much work to do, don’t we? I just posted this on my blog last night as well. I think Naomi did an excellent job of laying out facts based on history. Way to go for posting this! By the way, have you seen a documentary called Fiat Empire?

  27. Thanks!
